(opens in a new tab)\" href=\"#what-is-a-second-home\/secondary-home?\" target=\"_blank\">What is a second home\/secondary residence?<\/a><\/b><\/li><li><b><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Registration of the second home (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"#registration-of-the-second-home\" target=\"_blank\">Registration of the second home<\/a><\/b><\/li><li><b><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Second-home tax Switzerland (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"#second-home-tax-wwitzerland\" target=\"_blank\">Second-home tax Switzerland<\/a><\/b><\/li><li><b><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Second-home in Switzerland as a foreigner (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"#second-home-in-switzerland-as-a-foreigner\" target=\"_blank\">Second-home in Switzerland as a foreigner<\/a><\/b><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-a-second-home\/secondary-home?\"><strong>What is a second home\/secondary residence?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, a second home or secondary residence in Switzerland is normally only permitted as a \u201c<strong>weekly stay<\/strong>\u201d due to the principle of \u201cunit of residence\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that a person who occupies a second residence in the country during the week, for example for the purpose of <strong>work or further education<\/strong>, is considered a &#8220;weekly resident&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under these rules, the person will have a <strong>main residence outside of Switzerland<\/strong>, and their second home or weekly stay is one for the purpose of education, employment or training during the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, the residence you stay at during the week could also be someone\u2019s main residence, whereas <strong>staying in a holiday home at the weekend is considered a second home<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not always easy to assess which place of residence is considered the \u201ccentre of life\u201d and the main residence, it can depend on <strong>marital status, age, type of apartment<\/strong>, duration of employment at the place of work, duration of the weekly residence relationship, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, where the <strong>centre of life is \u2013 where you work and spend most of your time \u2013 is the main residence<\/strong>. Various rights and obligations, such as the right to vote or tax liability, are linked to these.<\/span> \u00a0 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detailed information on the subject of \u201cweek stays\u201d can be found <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wohn-sitz.ch\/zweitwohnsitz\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. <\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moveagain.ch\/umzug-starten\" style=\"background-color:#36a96b;color:#f2f7f4\">Calculate moving costs <\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"registration-of-the-second-home\"><strong>Registration of the second home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving into a secondary residence or a one-week stay is subject to registration in Switzerland. This must be <strong>reported to the residents\u2019 registration office<\/strong> either in person or online no later than 14 days after moving into the second home. The registration fee is <strong>CHF 20.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To register your second home, you need to bring a <strong>valid ID<\/strong> with you and an <strong>identity card or passport<\/strong>. Your ID card will then stay with the authorities and the weekly resident will receive a residence card in return, which must be returned when you move away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"second-home-tax-switzerland\"><strong>Second-home tax Switzerland<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>taxation<\/strong> of a secondary residence in Switzerland <strong>works like that of the main residence<\/strong>. The tax is <strong>levied by each region<\/strong> in which the residence is located. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For tax purposes, a second home is considered \u201c<strong>income in kind<\/strong>\u201d and is taxed on the<strong> basis of its rental value<\/strong> \u2013 that it\u2019s calculated based on the rent that could be earned if the property was rented out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the second home is actually rented out, <strong>income tax must be paid on the rental income<\/strong>. However, a second home is often registered in Switzerland for work purposes. As is the case for Swiss citizens, second homes that are occupied by foreigners <strong>must be registered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you stay in the country for <strong>less than 90 days as a non-employed person<\/strong> (tourist or pensioner), you <strong>don\u2019t need to apply<\/strong> for a separate residence permit. However, if you want to <strong>stay longer in Switzerland<\/strong>, you have to <strong>prove that you have sufficient financial<\/strong> means to make a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Switzerland is not a cheap country to live in, you should carefully consider this option in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re staying longer, you\u2019ll also need to arrange <strong>health and accident insurance<\/strong>, which provides you benefits within Switzerland. You only have to pay taxes if you also earn income from work in Switzerland or if you stay there for more than 6 months a year.
