Moving is an exciting event and the beginning of a new phase in life – for parents and especially for children. A change of residence is always associated with a certain level of stress, but when children are involved in the move, the stress level is even higher.

Depending on the distance to the new home, it may be necessary to change kindergarten or school and say goodbye to neighbours and friends. This can be a big adjustment for children and may also be associated with anxiety. But don’t worry, children are extremely adaptable and get used to the new circumstances faster than you think!

We have put together a few tips and tricks to make the moving day a little more enjoyable and stress-free for both sides:

1. Choose the right moving date

If children have to change schools or kindergartens, the best time to move is during the holidays (ideally the summer holidays). This way, there is no interruption during the semester. The children then have less time pressure and learning stress and are therefore more relaxed.

2. Plan the move together

During the planning phase of the move, it is useful to talk through everything with the child or children. What will change apart from the new place of residence? Can they still visit friends? What will the new neighbourhood be like? A walk in the new neighbourhood is a good way to familiarise the children with it before the move.

3. Let children help

It is important to make children feel that they are an important part of the move and that they have a say in it. The division of tasks during the move should also be discussed in advance. Depending on how old the children are, they may be able to do some of the work themselves. For example, you could ask them to clear out toys and clothes that are no longer needed. The child can also be asked to organise and pack their own belongings – under supervision.

4. Let them help design the new home

Once at the destination, it is also important to give children the feeling that they are allowed to actively shape the new home. For example, you can involve the children in choosing the new wall colour for the children’s room. If they are already old enough, they can even help with the colouring. Even if new furniture is bought for the children’s room, children are happy when their opinion is asked. Before the move, the children could already make a drawing of their new (dream) room – this is fun and gives them the feeling of having a say.

5. Books and movies on the subject of moving

There are numerous books on the topic of “moving house” that you can read together with children as preparation. It is also possible to design and order your own personalised moving book (e.g. at Cukibo). You can also find numerous short videos on YouTube that are suitable for children and deal with the topic.

6. Celebrating a farewell and a new start together

Sadly, for children, a move also sometimes means saying goodbye to their friends. This is especially difficult for older children and teenagers and can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. A farewell party, which strengthens the feeling of unity and encourages the children to see each other again soon, can help. A party with the new playmates or classmates to start in the new environment can also distract the children from the separation and help them make new friends.
